Jen Hatmaker’s 7 – Chapter 4 – Media {Bloom Book Club}

September 22, 2012 by Christie 19 Comments

Jen Hatmaker - 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

Oh, media!  Can I be honest and tell you how much I’ve dreaded this chapter?  I love media and I love connecting through it!  I’m a stay-at-home-mom.  I talk “toddler” all day and I love connecting with adults through social media, blogging, texting…

You get the drift!?

I dreaded being convicted about my TV watching, Facebook statusing, texting, blogging, “connecting”.

I’m the one that DVR’s my favorite shows and watches them during my free time; naptime and bedtime!  I’m the one that has my iPhone in hand wherever I am; all the time.  I’m the one that Facebook’s, Tweet’s, blog’s, and read’s blogs in my spare time; naptime and bedtime.  I love “connecting” through media!

But can I tell you how convicted I’ve been over how much time I spend doing these things?  Even before 7…

I’ve realized that I’m letting the world pass me by while I’m “connecting”.  I’ve realized that sometimes I’m neglecting time with the Lord while I’m “connecting”.  I’ve realized that sometimes I’m spending more time “connecting” with others than I am with my husband.  And, I know that the Lord isn’t pleased by that.

My communion with God suffers not for lack of desire but time.  And let’s be honest; I say I don’t have time, yet I found thirty-five minutes for Facebook and an hour for my shows.  I found half an hour for YouTube videos on how to fix lil’ black girls’ hair (my Ethiopian children are on deck, and I can’t have them looking nappy).  I found fifteen minutes for the radio and twenty-four minutes for a missed 30 Rock episode.  So when I say I don’t have time, I’m a gigantic liar.
I have time. I just spend it elsewhere.

-Jen Hatmaker

I can so relate!  I have so much time that I spend elsewhere.  It’s time to set the priorities and put Him and family first!

I know that all of my “connecting” isn’t bad.  My aim in “connecting” is to impact other’s with the love of Christ, but it shouldn’t come before Him and them.

I don’t ever want to let a day pass where I feel like I could have loved more on my family.

How did this chapter impact you?
I’d love to hear how you’ve been impacted!
And, if you haven’t read the book and want a copy, you can find them here!

Wow! How I needed this today. I want my blogging to honor God, yet my quiet time with Him seems to have taken a backseat. Thank you for your honesty and love for all things family. Have a great weekend. 🙂

Happy Saturday! I’m addicted to social media too! Right now I’m typing as fast as I can before my hubby asks why I’ve been on the computer for sooooo long lol.

It is crazy how much all forms of media have become part of our life. Lee and I talk all the time about how much things have changed in our lifetime. I’ve really felt convicted in the last few years about what I watch, listen to, and read. Not saying I’m perfect, but I’ve done a lot better with those things. However, I’m still a little addicted to all my social media. Thanks for the reminder.

    i totally agree with you!
sometimes i feel guilty when i haven’t tweeted or blogged, but then i think to myself, maybe i just need to have some time with God instead..if i can’t think of something to say then maybe God’s trying to say something to me..great thoughts!

I was at a community function not to long ago, just gazing around, when I noticed that well over half the people there were fiddling with their phones. Seriously! All these people together – but totally apart because they were busy being together with whoever was on the phone instead of the folks right beside them.

Isn’t this true? It really can be all-consuming, yet if I pay attention I know when it is too much and definitely something I am being convicted over. Thanks for this post!

Just found your blog!:) I read that book and it messed me up. I’m such a time waster! And we don’t have cable/dish but we do have Netflix and Internet- and oh how easily and hour or two passes by with either! If I spent that much time in the word or with family/friends- how much better would our lives be?! Thank you for sharing this! Happy Tuesday!

oh girl, have i been convicted on this as well. Sometimes I just want mindless tv watching and not have to think, but that is time I could be reading my bible, praying, or having conversations with my husband or kids. I haven’t read this book, but have heard so many great things about it, it is on my to-read list.

It’s a hard one to balance as time spent on social media means time lost on other things that are often more important. But a little can’t hurt, can it?
