Natural Herbal Living – Review and Giveaway

April 14, 2014 by Corine 26 Comments

I received a Natural Herbal Living Herb Box in order to facilitate my review.  All opinions are my own. Affiliate links enclosed.
Natural Herbal Living Review and Giveaway

Anyone who knows me knows I love gardening. I love growing my own vegetable and herbs. I love the look, feel and smell of natural food. However, I have two really big problems: 1) I am not always sure what to do with all the herbs I have managed to grow over the years and 2) I live in Maryland and can only grow herbs and vegetables a few months a year. Needless to say, when Christie approached me about reviewing the Natural Herbal Living Magazine and Herb Box, I jumped at the chance. The Natural Herbal Living Magazine and Herb Box solve both of my problems. They have a subscription plan that allows you to learn about each herb not only on an intellectual level, but on a physical one as well.

I received a copy of the Stinging Nettles Box. Initially, when it
came, my first thoughts were “Stinging nettles…you mean the things that caused me so much pain when playing hide-and-seek in the woods as a child? What can they be good for?” To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

However, as I started to review the content of the box, my disappointment turned to surprise. While reviewing the information in the box and magazine, I learned that stinging nettles can be used to treat joint pain, arthritis, urinary problems and hay fever (allergic rhinitis).

The box contained directions on how to make stinging nettles tea and I decided to start by making a jar.  The tea has a bitter taste to it, so I added a little raw sugar to help mellow it out.  I must admit that since I started drinking nettles tea, I have not taken my allergy medicine. The scientist in me wanted to design a research study to see if I’m just suffering from a placebo effect, lol.

Another thing I love about Natural Herbal Living Magazine and Herb Box is that they put everything you could want to know about a single herb into a central location.  You can kiss your Google searches goodbye. I personally recommend printing the magazines out and putting them in a binder. I placed the binder on the shelf next to my other cookbooks. However, some people would prefer to keep them on their computer (you can load the PDF into any e-reader program).

The herb box contains a very nice supply of the herb in several forms, plus a project booklet that includes recipes (cooking and personal care). The booklet and magazine (the magazine covers everything in much
more detail) both also covers how to use each herb in all its forms: dried, fresh, essential oil, flower essence, etc. I used the stinging nettles to make a nettles balm to help with my extremely dry skin from winter. While making the nettles balm was easy, it was also time consuming (2+ hours).

My only concerns with the box are some of the claims in the magazine.  For example, the description of Nettle Flower Essence states the following “Stinging Nettle Flower Essence helps you clear your thinking so your can see and respond to unhealthy, toxic or abusive situations more appropriately. This can be on any level -… negative thinking about yourself, addictive habits…”  As a clinical psychologist I know it is extremely hard to change negative thinking and break addictive habits.  So I am concern about someone using Nettle Flower Essence in place of seeking professional help.  The magazine and booklet has a disclaimer saying the information contained in it is for informational purposes only.

What's in the Stinging Nettle Box by Natural Herbal Living What’s In The Box?

A professionally printed print out with step by step instructions.
Copious amounts of organic dried nettle leaf
Nettle Flower Essence
Nourishing Adaptogenic Infusion Tea Blend
Nettle-Cucumber soap bar from The Nerdy Farm Wife
A quart sized jar for making your herbal infusions in
A mesh strainer for straining your herbal tea
Ingredients to make a nettle, plantain, calendula salve – a wonderful salve for the skin
An essential oil profile (if applicable)
A flower essence profile (if applicable)
Various recipes both food and herbal that utilize the herb of the month.
Ecological impact of certain herbs.
Ethnographic information regarding the traditional uses of some herbs in various cultures.
Seasonal considerations of herbalism, when to plant, when and how to harvest, and when to create.

The monthly herb box cost $30 per month plus $10 shipping and has a retail value of $40-50. While this may be a little bit on the pricey side, I think it is well worth the price for the amount of stuff you get.  If you subscribe to the box monthly, you’ll get a 10% discount!

If you are on a budget or just want a sample of what to expect, you can sign up for the bi-weekly newsletter here and you’ll get a free issue: Approaching a Personal Herbal Practice, Herbalism Basics and Safety Information!

Each month you can sign up for the upcoming month’s box on or before the 15th of the month. You can sign up for a single month, or save about 10% and sign up for a monthly subscription. Some of the upcoming boxes include:

Thanks for the review! I am glad you enjoyed the box. In the first issue everyone gets with their first order (but I didn’t send for review) it discusses what flower essences are and how they work, she suggests seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist if people are working on deep seeded issues. She is also a therapist, herbalist AND flower essence practitioner. They are pretty amazing tools to have in your tool box.

I found your blog through another site while searching for herbal remedies. As for prayer . . . that God’s will continue to be zealously accomplished by the true followers of his son, Jesus Christ, here on earth (Matthew 24:14; 28:19,20), that his kingdom government rule over the earth forever (Psalm 37:9-11, 29; Proverbs 2:20-22; Revelation 21:4) and that Jehovah’s name is soon vindicated as sovereign ruler over the universe. Also pray that more & more sheep-like ones discern that this is the time of the end, and realize that it’s time to listen to the message found in God’s word, the Bible, and it’s time to act – NOW – before it’s too late, calling on Jehovah’s name and putting true faith in the ransom sacrifice of his son. PS – did you know that tonight, after sundown, the first full moon after the spring equinox (Nisan 14 on the ancient Hebrew calender) is the anniversary of the death of Jesus Christ, and are you planning to be at his memorial this evening (as he commanded) to show your appreciation for him saving your life? (“Keep doing this in remembrance of me.”—Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24)
