Halloween is two weeks from today, so we thought we’d tackle a Halloween related reader question today!
“Our family has decided not to participate in our usual Halloween traditions of parties and trick or treating this year. Can you suggest a few Christian friendly fall activities that we might be able to enjoy? We still want our kids to enjoy this time of the year, but have been convicted about the worldly celebration that is Halloween.”
Thanks for your question! We don’t celebrate Halloween at our house either, but we still have a lot of fun during the fall season! Here are a few ways to celebrate this time of year and hold true to your convictions, too!
Local Church Festivals
Our church has a yearly fall festival with games, food, hay rides, and more! We make it free to the public and consider it one of our biggest outreach efforts of the year. Some churches may charge for food and games and donate the money towards missions or a local organization, so just be prepared for that! But, it should be pretty easy to find a few churches around your area that have fall festivals that are open to the community!
The Pumpkin Prayer
If you still plan on carving a pumpkin this year, you can turn it into a time of fellowship with your family and outreach to those that come to your door by doing The Pumpkin Prayer and carving (like the one found here at Blessed Beyond a Doubt)! Instead of the typical scary pumpkin carvings, you end up with a finished product that glorifies the Lord instead!
Visit a Judgment House
Do you have youth aged kids? Skip the haunted house and find a local church that hosts a Judgment House. Judgment Houses usually play out a real life scenario that leads the main characters to death and the judgment seat of Christ. Based on the decisions they made throughout their lives, they either go to Heaven or Hell. Visitors get a glimpse of what Heaven and Hell might look like and are given the opportunity to accept Christ at the end. We take our youth each year and they bring lost friends as an evangelism outreach. They love it and appreciate the time and effort that the hosting churches put into the event.
Share Christ with Trick or Treaters
Right now we’ve decided not to participate in Halloween at all, but if you desire to reach all of the kids that will be coming to your door, think about making a goodie bag with candy and including a gospel tract inside. If your kids aren’t trick or treating, let them help hand out the goodie bags and share Christ’s love with their friends!
Visit a Local Farm
Fall doesn’t have to just be about Halloween! Use this time to teach your kids about the change of seasons and the way farmers live by visiting a local farm. Fall is a beautiful time to take a hay ride, see the animals, and see how local farmers harvest their crops.
Celebrate Reformation Day
Did you know that October 31 is known as Reformation Day? Reformation Day is one of the most important days in Christian history. On this day in 1571 Martin Luther nailed his infamous 95 Theses to door of Whitenburg church and began what is known as the Protestant Reformation. If you’re a Protestant Christian, October 31 is a day of celebration, a day of thanks, and a day to be remembered! Check to see if your local churches have celebrations going on or celebrate from home with these ideas from First Comes Love!

I’ve never been a big fan of Halloween! These fall activities are great! I haven’t heard of a judgement house, but it sounds scarier than a haunted house for sure. I love the idea of sharing the gospel with trick or treaters. Do you have any ideas on something that I could pass out? Thanks for sharing! Hope to see you at True Aim.
