I am a single mom of a now, 14 year old daughter. I left my job to raise my daughter and when I tried to re-enter the workforce the doors to employment shut. During this time I gave my life to the Lord – He had different plans for me! He placed a burden on my heart to praise His name with my artwork. What started off as selling cards at craft fairs is now Threshold Handmade Paper Art.
My design sensibility embraces both the old and the new. I am drawn to exploring themes of antiquity including biblical symbolism, through the medium of papermaking. The character of antiquity is created both by the rich textural properties of the paper combined with symbols of the past. The recurring theme that appears in my art is transformation. Even the paper I make goes through the process of being destroyed in its original plant form, only to be transformed into a work of art.
I upcycle (tear up colored paper), whiz it up in the blender with water to make a slurry. This goes into a vat. I dip my screen into the slurry and turn it out onto a surface with decorative objects. When the pulp dries it is ‘cast’ with designs. Fibers, metallics and ephemera mixed in with the pulp become embedded into the dried paper. It is a delightful and messy process which has taken over my small kitchen. It is a forgiving medium with happy ‘accidents.’ My sincere desire is to inspire and uplift others.
God bless,
June
