Big Hearts, Small Wallets: Gift-giving on a Budget

December 8, 2012 by Christie 5 Comments

It’s been widely noted that the best things in life are free, and with the upcoming holiday season this just may be the best idea to keep in mind. Eagerly anticipated and joyfully celebrated, the holiday season can also be stressful and guilt-ridden. With our hearts larger than our wallets, financial constraints often leave us feeling empty when we can’t afford a gift for everyone on our list. Ease the gift-giving burden with one of the most heartfelt gifts you can give: Shutterfly Christmas Cards.

Enjoyed by all, holiday cards are an affordable approach to giving gifts and can be filled with heartwarming wishes, more valuable than the most expensive gift on anyone’s list. In addition to adding a picture of your family for a Christmas photo card that can be appreciated all year long, a little thought and creativity goes a long way. Some of the greatest gifts are free, such as offering to:
  • ·       Baby- or pet-sit, plant- or house-sit
  •      Walk the dog for a week
  •      Mow the lawn, trim the trees
  •      Clean the garage or organize a garage sale
  •      Change the air-filters and smoke detector batteries

More often than not, spending time with someone is the greatest gift of all. With a simple note inserted inside the holiday card, request to spend one-on-one time together in an environment that leaves plenty of room for conversation, such as:

  • ·       Making dinner or taking a cooking class
  •      Going on a day hike or weekend camping trip
  •      Taking a class or joining a hobby group
  •      Enjoying an evening under the stars
  •      Participating in the recipients favorite past-time

Most importantly, make sure what you are offering to do is meaningful to the recipient. Even if it may not be tops on your list, the memories you will be making are worth more than anything you can buy. Finally, make sure you follow through with what you promise to do.

Great ideas Christie! I’d much rather have some of these than store-bought, expensive gifts. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂
