I am always looking for good blogs and podcasts. It’s a comfort to have “go-to” resources for reading and listening to while waiting somewhere or doing chores. I thought I would share a few of my favorites if you are looking for some as well!
Blogs
Some of my favorites blogs may be new to you, while some may be some that you follow every day!
Jessica Pickowicz writes for Beautiful Thing, which is part of Entreating Favor. Jessica is the wife of a pastor and the homeschooling mother of two, so she doesn’t have a chance to write very often. But when she does, it is always powerful and spot on.
Entreating Favor, run by Jessica’s husband, Nate Pickowicz, and three other men: Deering Dyer, Kofi Adu-Boahen, and Landon Chapman, is another favorite. These men cover all sorts of topics, from book reviews to sermons, and they post a daily update of links to interesting tidbits from all over the web.
Michelle Lesley is a wonderful “church lady” who strives to be a Titus 2:3 mentor online. Her posts vary from studies of books of the Bible to relevant topics facing today’s church members. Again, the wife of a worship pastor and a homeschooling mother, she prioritizes her family, but her writing is encouraging and edifying.
Erin Benzinger blogs at Do Not Be Surprised. Erin lives south of me, and one of these days I am going to be brave enough to contact her and ask her where she is going to Seminary, as the things she discusses sound very familiar to me 😉 Her articles are thought-provoking and biblical. She also runs a podcast, which brings me to such things.
Podcasts
Midway through spring, my husband bought me a new phone, and I discovered podcasts. Now I listen to podcasts while I’m cleaning, doing laundry, driving, exercising…whenever I have a few spare moments and no one clamoring in my ear for attention. I love listening to all sorts of different podcasts, and here are my top suggestions for the new year.
I am linking most of these podcasts to their websites, not the actual podcasts. Search for them on iTunes or through the linked websites!
Erin Benzinger runs Equipping Eve. This is a ministry of No Compromise Radio, which I also recommend. Equipping Eve is solely for women, however, so if that is something that appeals to you, please listen to her. She is solid and biblical. Mike Abendroth, who runs NoCo radio, is a pretty typical “theology” podcast, and offers a blend of sermons, commentary on current topics, and theological teaching. He has a pretty droll sense of humor, so he may not be for everyone, but I love it.
Sheologians is actually my number one pick if you are only going to choose one podcast for 2017. Summer White and Joy Temby are sharp young women who put up a short informative podcast for women each Friday. This month (January 2017) they are tackling the dangers of feminism, but they have covered a wide variety of important theological topics in the their short existence. Summer is the daughter of theologian Dr. James White and Joy also participates in Apologia Radio. I haven’t listened to a lot of Apologia Radio, but the few episodes I’ve heard have been edifying and helpful. Summer also blogs at Sheologians.com.
I have a hard time listening to local or national news, because then I have to answer a million questions our son asks, so I tend to rely on my husband to update me on what’s going on in the world. The Peter Heck Podcast, takes daily events and views them through the lens of Scripture. I met Mr. Heck at a homeschool convention last spring, and he has an incredible grasp on both the political goings-on in the world and a biblical worldview. Obviously not solely for women, but if you want to know what is happening in the world and how to respond biblically, Peter Heck is a phenomenal resource.
When We Understand the Text is the podcast and YouTube channel from Gabe Hughes in Junction City, Kansas. You might already be familiar with his 90 second WWUTT videos, but he also offers a daily podcast. Monday through Wednesday he exegetes a New Testament passage (as of this writing he is going through II Peter), Thursday is Old Testament (currently II Samuel), and Friday he tackles questions he receives or a hot topic that has hit Christianity recently.
Finally, my newest favorite is Calvinist Batman & Friends. Batman interviews authors, theologians, artists, and other interesting and influential Christians, and he always asks great questions and asks for book recommendations. I have learned a lot about the history of the Reformation, Rosaria Butterfield, Reviving New England, and spiritual warfare from his interviews. I am super excited because he is starting a new podcast very soon in which they read systematic theology books aloud: think theology audio books. It’s daunting to sit down with a 900 page book, but hearing it read to you can be life-changing!
Other People You Should Know
These people don’t really fit into either of the above category, but they should be on your radar for 2017, if they aren’t already.
Emily Thomes is a wonderful young woman with an amazing testimony. Both Sheologians and Entreating Favor interviewed her, and she has begun to periodically blog here and there. You can follow her on Facebook and Twitter, and I encourage you to do so. She may be in her early 20s, but her passion for God’s redemptive powers will encourage you every day, as will her sheer joy at her salvation.
I also heard Rosaria Butterfield interviewed on a few different podcasts. She is now a pastor’s wife and homeschooling mom, but she speaks very knowledgeably on how to love the LGBTQ community. This is an issue that won’t be going away anytime soon, and she has powerful things to say. Mrs. Butterfield has published books and periodically writes at The Gospel Coalition website.
