Follow Me Bible Study {Week 3} Delight in God

Week Three Scripture Memory

Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:35

Day One – Our Father

Do we truly understand the concept of adoption into the family of God?  Do we understand the magnitude of what Christ offered us on the cross?
I’m so thankful that the Lord has blessed our lives with the opportunity to experience the earthly adoption of our two girls.  Not only has it helped me better understand that love that God has for me, but it makes me want to love and teach my babies even more so that they might be spiritually adopted one day, too.

“Without question our status before God was settled at the moment we turned from our sin and ourselves and trusted in Jesus as Savior and Lord.  But our lives are based on the love relationship we enjoy and experience every moment of every day as God our Father saturates us as His children with His affection.” – David Platt

I think one of the most comforting things as a Christian is the relationship we have with the Creator of the universe.  No other religion offers an intimate relationship with their god as Christianity does in the Lord.  The Lord is forgiving, our provider, our leader, our protector, our sustainer, our comforter, our director, and so much more!  Even if your earthly father didn’t provide all of these for you, God can and will.  Have you trusted him as your Lord and Savior?

What does being a follower of Jesus mean to you?

Day Two – Jesus Satisfies Our Desires

“So this garden paradise where Adam and Eve lived wasn’t a place where humans had no needs or desires.  Rather, it was a place where all of their needs and desires were met by the God who’d created them.” – David Platt

I had never thought about my desires the way this week’s study had me thinking about them!  I am so comforted in the thought that the desires God gave Adam and Eve were desires that were met by Him!  Their desires weren’t earthly, fleshly desires they were aligned with God’s will for their lives.  It wasn’t until Satan came into the picture that the desires that God meant for good were turned into evil desires for things that they weren’t intended to have!
Our lives should be lived in a way where our desires are those that God can fulfill, not man.  I remember who I was before I was saved and I remember the desires that I had.  They were desires that I wanted for myself and they were desires that I fulfilled on my own.  They were desires that pulled me away from the One who desired to love me!

“The tragedy of this story is that Adam and Eve believed the lie that their desires could only be fulfilled apart from God – that they had to disobey God and act in secret in order to experience true pleasure.  Sadly, in Adam and Eve’s quest to fulfill their stomachs, they ended up running away from the only One who could fulfill their souls.  Even more sadly, all of us have made the same mistake.” – David Platt

Do you trust that God can provide for all of your desires and your needs (spiritual and physical), apart from yourself? Have you seen Him provide throughout your life?  Then why do we continue to doubt Him?

“To come to Jesus, or to believe in Jesus, is to look to Him to satisfy your soul forever. To come to Jesus is to taste and see that He is good (Psalm 34:8) and to find in Him the end of all your desires.” – David Platt

Day Three – Jesus Offers True Pleasure
I remember when the Lord started really working on my heart about eight or nine years ago.  I was being convicted more and more about the lifestyle I was leading, but I wanted so badly to hang onto the pleasures of the world.  I wanted to continue in sin because it felt right, it was fun, and it seemed so much more appealing than what Christ had to offer me.
It wasn’t until the Lord saved me, began taking away my worldly desires, changing my heart, and flipping my world upside down that I realized that every pleasure I tried to hang onto was nothing compared the true pleasure offered by Christ.

“The solution isn’t to abandon our search for pleasure – it’s to search for more pleasure.  We must seek the kind of happiness and joy that come from truly delighting in Christ and allowing Him to change our affections.” – David Platt

If you find yourself straddling the fence with one foot in the world and one foot in the church, it’s time to get off the fence.  It’s time to pray for the Lord to take away the worldly pleasures you cling to and ask Him to give you a new heart; a heart for Him, a heart for what pleases Him.  I promise you’ll never look back!
In what ways do you experience pleasure through your relationship with Jesus?
Day Four – Examining the Christian Life

What does the Christian life mean to you?  What does it look like for you?
Many skeptics look into the Christian world and their perception is skewed.  They think Christianity is supposed to be a long list of “do’s and don’t”, but they don’t see that when we’ve been called out by the Creator of the universe, our hearts desire (or should desire) to want to be near Him through prayer, bible reading, and worship.
But, I have to say that we may be part of the problem.  Are we living lives that look like we’ve been hit by the Gospel of Jesus?  Are we delighting in our time with the Lord or are we actually living like we’ve been called to a long list of daily chores.  If that’s how we’re living our Christian lives, we need to revaluate where we are in our relationship with the Lord.

“I’m afraid many followers of Jesus have incorporated a number of religious chores into their daily Christian lives.  They believe there are certain tasks every Christian must perform even if they lack the motivation – even if they honestly dislike performing them.” – David Platt

Our time in the word, in prayer, and in worship should be time that not only brings honor and glory to His name, but it should be time we enjoy spending with our Savior.
I must admit, my prayer life, my time in the word, and my worship need to be made more of a priority in my life.  It’s so easy to let the busyness of the day allow us to put our time with Him on the back burner, but over time it begins to affect our attitudes, our thinking, and our relationships.

May we strive to make Him first in all that we do!
