Our kids are still really young (almost 3 and 6 months), but I always want them to know that putting others before themselves is honorable to the Lord.
I always want them to know that helping and serving others, especially the least of these, displays the Gospel in a tangible way.
I always want them to know that Jesus put others before himself in order to give us life.
Everybody Can Help Somebody is one of the best books I’ve read to the kids in a long time. Not only is it teaching them a tangible lesson in serving others, but it’s allowing them to see that God’s grace, mercy, and love are offered to all, no matter the circumstances we’ve come from.
In this true story, Denver grows up working on a plantation during the Great Depression and is never given the opportunity to go to school. He grows up very poor and when he gets older he decides that he’s going to hop a train. He rides and rides and rides and finds himself in Fort Worth, Texas.
Denver finds himself with no money, no place to live, and unable to get a job because he doesn’t know how to read or write. People weren’t very nice to Denver and no one would help him. As the years past and people continued to treat Denver unkindly (even the “church people”), his heart began to harden and he began to question whether God loved him.
But God sends a special woman (and her husband) to Denver; a couple that loved the Lord. Miss Debbie and Mr. Ron spent a lot of time with Denver, teaching him how to read and write and about how much the Lord loved him. Through their love for him, Denver began to tell others about his life story and God’s love around the nation.
Everybody Can Help Somebody is an awesome resource for teaching kids how one persons kindness towards another person can impact eternity.
