Thankful Giving Jar {DIY}

November 28, 2012 by Christie 5 Comments

The Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone and we’re now in full swing towards Christmas!  I’m hoping that our tree is up and the house is decorated by the time this post goes live!

I love Christmas and everything that goes with it; the cool air, the smells, the sounds, the sights.  I.love.it!

On Sunday, one of our youth parents briefly mentioned the idea of a “Thankful Giving Jar”.  Today I’d love to share it with you and the idea behind it!

Most people would usually do this in the month of November leading up to Thanksgiving, but I thought the time of year where we’re all rushing to buy gifts and making our lists would be a great time to remember all that the Lord has already blessed us with! This would be a great activity to do with your kids to get them in the spirit of giving back!
I took a flower vase we had sitting around and added a green, red, and silver ribbon to it to give it a more decorative feel.  I then cut a few index cards in half and placed them on our kitchen table.
We’re committing to write down our blessings every day, all day (as they come to mind) until the New Year.  As we add our index card to the vase we’ll also add a dollar.  At the beginning of the New Year we’ll add it all up and give it away to a family or organization in need!
Too often we forget that every good and perfect gift is from the Lord (James 1:17) and we fail to remember all that He has already blessed us with!  This activity will help us remember and give back at the same time!
I’d love for you to join us as we seek to glorify the Lord through our thankfulness and giving this Christmas season!  I’ll post about how our jar is growing throughout the next few weeks and after the New Year!  May He be glorified in it all!

    My goal for every Christmas is to try to teach my children to focus on Jesus and not of material things during this season. This is so difficult. I look forward to your posts and jar updates. blessings, Diane Roark http://www.recipesforourdailybread.com
