It was the morning our baby girl was going to be released from the hospital. I finally slept in (we hadn’t slept for 3 days), but Q was up at 5:30am. Little did I know, Daddy had kicked in and he was out organizing the car and buying bottles and bottles of hand sanitizer.
The first part of our morning consisted of calling our insurance company, setting up a pediatrician to see her within 24-48 hours of leaving the hospital, and contacting our homestudy agency to get all of our documents sent to our attorney.
By 10am we were headed to the hospital to get our girl! As we pulled into the parking deck I checked my email on Q’s phone. Our homestudy agency didn’t have copies of our birth certificates – something we needed for the Interstate Compact process. I immediately called my friend Astrid, who had a key to our house, and asked her to search through our bedroom drawers…we needed our birth certificates so that we could get the next step started.
“I found Q’s but I can’t find yours.” she said. “Look again!” I pleaded.
We headed into the hospital and headed towards the nursery. The doctor handed us a “Baby and You” brochure and asked us to look over it and ask any questions we might have. A few minutes later they wheeled our baby girl in…she was ours!
Astrid couldn’t find my birth certificate so I quickly called my mom. She couldn’t find a copy and I pleaded with her to run downtown, purchase a copy, and fax it to the attorney. Within an hour the birth certificate dilemma was taken care of.
The attorney arrived and signed the discharge papers, we dressed Moriah in her going home outfit, strapped her in her carseat and headed for the car…she was ours!
We made plans to meet the attorney at her office that afternoon to make sure we had all of the documents to send off for the Florida Interstate Compact. We ran into a few more glitches that afternoon, but by the grace of God we had every document we needed by 4pm and everything was being sent off.
As we left the attorney’s office we called Kevin’s parents to let them know we were on our way. Battered and bewildered, we arrived to open arms and a home cooked meal…we were home…
…to be continued.
