Q and I enjoyed our time away. It was fairly uneventful but just how we like it! We stayed in a one room efficiency (pretty small!) that had a Murphy bed, sofa, and small kitchenette. So, we were able to save money by cooking most of our meals there. It also had a balcony with a great view…
We took a few self-portraits…it’s become a science!
We arrived on Thursday afternoon and decided to check out the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, NC. The original Mast General Store has been there since 1882. We didn’t make it to the original and instead stopped at the one in downtown Boone on the campus of Appalachian State University. Not my type of town! I’ve been out of college for 3 years and it seems like foreign territory!
So, we decided to stop for dinner and head back for the night!
On Saturday we took a drive to The Blowing Rock and figured we’d be tourists for the day. They wanted $6 a person to look at the rock…the cheapos that we are decided that maybe we’d pay that once we had kids and wanted them to experience it 😉
We got back in the car and decided to head to Grandfather Mountain, which the GPS told us was 9 miles away…it ended up being 20 miles away! I’d warned Q that it would probably cost to walk the Mile High Swinging Bridge, etc….it was $15 per person just to enter….nope. So, we turned around, stopped by the old man selling apple butter and jellies and gave him a few dollars…yum! Now that’s an expense I can handle!
On the way back down the mountain we decided we’d try to catch a cheap view and take the Blue Ridge Parkway. About every mile they have signs for “Observation Points”. We stopped at the first one we saw and parked. The smell of skunk should have warned us…
We headed into the woods. Me, being the optimist that I am, assured Q that it couldn’t be very far for the “view”. He obliged and kept following…silly man! We walked over large tree roots and dodged limbs until we finally decided that 1.) we weren’t getting any farther out of the woods and 2.) the view just wasn’t worth it!
I decided to document the hike back out…laughing all the way!
And he thought, “What was she thinking!?”
So, we kept driving and decided to stop in the middle of the road for these next few pics, since it didn’t seem that the “Observation Points” were going to yield much success!
Until we came to this spot! We decided to take a picture of each other…
And then tried our hand at another “self-portrait”!
And then tried our hand at another “self-portrait”!
Oops!
We finally got a decent one….
We finally got a decent one….
…when a passerby offered to take one for us!
…and I returned the favor!
We headed back and enjoyed our night and headed out on Saturday morning…so we could get back in time for college football, of course!
It was a blessing to spend time away with my blessing of a husband. We seem to always be busy with church, school, events, etc. when we’re home, that it’s a must that we sneak away every now and then!
I hope you all had a great weekend!
Check back tomorrow as my first post for Teen Talk Tuesday will be up on Jill’s blog!

Sounds like a wonderful getaway! “Couple time” is so important, and it’s so easy to let it go when we’re busy with everything else.
Lovely view, and great pictures!
